Acne Treatments

Whether you are a teenager or an adult, acne can be an all too common problem for you. Acne lesions, especially when active and visible, can have a tremendously damaging impact on your self confidence. As it is such a global problem, modern medicine has been working tirelessly to develop an effective  treatment.

A wide range of acne treatments

Since we are all individuals and a little bit different from each other, it should come as no surprise that a little bit of trial and error may be required to find the acne treatment that works best for each individual. Fortunately, an ever increasing number of possible choices, now well into the hundreds, exist to help you with treating your  problem.

Most problems fall into one of these categories:

Mild cleanser – These products are normally readily available over the counter in your local drug store. Although they contain mild ingredients, they are very capable of cleansing your face of dirt and bacteria. Good news as both are a main cause.

Chemical - These products (also available over the counter) contain one of several different chemicals that are great for eliminating bacteria and reducing the occurrence. Common examples are salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.

Prescription - An expanding range of prescription drugs are available to help treat it. As these treatments work in different ways you can be sure that no matter how severe your own problem is, there will be a treatment that can help. As they are not available over the counter you must see a doctor or dermatologist to get a prescription for these medicines.

Other - Some other types of  treatments available include light therapy, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, and pulse light treatments. The majority of these  are normally only available through a doctor, dermatologist, or other skin specialist.

Stay clean, stay clear

Keeping your skin clean and bacteria-free is probably the single most important thing to remember. It is caused by a combination of factors, the number one factor is bacteria. Less bacteria equates to less outbreaks.

There is, however, no need to scrub your skin or even rub heavily to keep it clean. In fact by scrubbing harder you are very likely to irritate your skin. This is an ideal environment for bacteria and more bacteria means more acne lesions. It seems strange, but when it comes to cleaning your skin, less is more. Wash your skin a maximum of two times a day using the minimum of pressure.

Many companies sell all sorts of products that they claim will be the solution to your acne problems, but if you look closely most of them contain the same or very similar ingredients.A good treatment will not cause unnecessary irritation or cause unfortunate side effects like dryness, flaking and itching. If it makes it easy for you to clean your face, it is a good treatment.

If one product causes unpleasant side effects for you, either reduce your use of that product or change to a different product. Irrespective of which products you choose to use, it must be remembered that it will take time for them to work. You should be prepared to stick with a product for a reasonable length of time to properly evaluate it’s effectiveness. If after a few weeks or so, you are not happy with the results, then move on to another treatment.
